It is one in the morning as I write this, and I have just finished reading a remarkable novel, 'Words in Deep Blue' by Cath Crowley.
The book talks about the impact words have on our existence, our ideas and our lives. It speaks of complex themes like grief, love and friendship, all through the over-arching theme of a bookstore and letters written and hidden between pages of books. Reading Words in Deep Blue made me wish we'd still write letters like those to the people we love. The dual POVs and the way the characters come to life as the novel progressed is commendable. Rachel and George, in particular are well-written and layered characters. From start to finish, the novel is thought-provoking and refreshing. It fits right into the niche of books I've come to love, along with 'All the Bright Places' and 'Breathless' by Jennifer Niven and 'Five Feet Apart' by Mikki Daughtry, Rachael Lippincott, and Tobias Iaconis.
I'll share some of my favourite lines from the book, that really stuck with me:
"Sometimes, the end begins."
"We are the books we read and the things we love. Our ghosts hide in the things we leave behind."
"Love of the things that made you happy is steady too- books, words, music, art- these are lights that reappear in a broken universe."
"The past is with me; the present is here. The future is unmapped and unchangeable. Ours for the imagining: spreading out before us. Sunlight-filled, deep blue and the darkness."
All in all, I'd say this book is definitely worth a read!
