Book: Beautiful World, Where are You
Author: Sally Rooney
Genre: Literary fiction
Themes: Romance, friendship, precarity, and social class
What I Loved about the Book: This novel beautifully showcases the pain and joy of human relationships, in essence, the very art of being human. 'Beautiful World Where are You' traces the journey of four individuals- Alice, Felix, Eileen and Simon, and the way their lives get entangled.
The book describes some experiences we've all had, but have never been able to describe. It is a novel that is real and honest to its core.
Having said that, it is not a breezy read. The chapters, especially in the beginning, felt too long. The email device starts to get old pretty fast. The first half of the novel is a part you need to power through to reach the more happening, more interesting bits.
I must point out that, with lines like 'I feel certain that it is better to be deeply loved than widely liked', and 'But this is the life I have, and the only one.' there is a lot one can pick up and learn from the book.
I have mixed feelings about this book, and took forever to read it, but I'd say it was worth the read!
Quotes from the Book I Liked:
"At times I think of human relationships as something soft like sand or water, and by pouring them into particular vessels we give them shape.”
“Maybe we're just born to love and worry about the people we know, and to go on loving and worrying even when there are more important things we should be doing.”
“When I look back at those years, I feel touched and almost pained by the simplicity of the life I was living, because I knew what I had to do, and I did it, that was all.”
Other Books by the Author: Normal People, Conversations with Friends, Two Stories
