What I Love About the Book: A Thousand Splendid Suns tells the story of two Afghani women- Mariam and Laila. The two tales are alike, yet unique, and beautifully interwoven. The detailed, well thought-over metaphors add to the beauty of the novel. Right from the first page, Khaled Hosseini manages to capture the attention of the reader, and soon shakes them to the core. The author gives the reader a glimpse into the tumultuous past of Afghanistan, and portrays how love and humanity sometimes manage to shine through in spite of all the hatred, doom and gloom around.
There are moments in the book that send shivers down your spine, moments when you have goosebumps, and moments that make you cry. Each character helps the storyline advance, each dialogue has a purpose. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a book no history-lover should miss out on.
Beautiful Quotes from the Book: “One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.”
“A man's heart is a wretched, wretched thing. It isn't like a mother's womb. It won't bleed. It won't stretch to make room for you.”
“I'm sorry," Laila says, marveling at how every Afghan story is marked by death and loss and unimaginable grief. And yet, she sees, people find a way to survive, to go on.”
“Tell your secret to the wind, but don’t blame it for telling the trees.”
“You see, some things I can teach you. Some you learn from books. But there are things that, well, you have to see and feel.”
