Set in Shahjahanpur during the revolt of 1857, A Flight of Pigeons is Ruskin Bond’s classic novella about the twists of fate, history and the human heart, based on true events.

About the book: The novella, set in Shahjahanpur in the pre-independence era, tells the story of Ruth Labadoor, who is a thirteen-year-old British girl living in India. When her father, a British officer is killed during the Revolt of 1857, her family takes refuge with their trusted companion, Lala Ramjimal. But, in an unexpected turn of events, Ruth’s family is abducted by Javed Khan, a Pathan who opposed the British. Javed Khan’s wish to make Ruth his second wife adds to their dismay. Ruth can only hope that the British overtake Delhi again and that she is free from fear, bafflement and despair.

Based on true events, A Flight of Pigeons is a haunting story, rich in detail and drama, told with simplicity and deep humanity. Written with Ruskin Bond’s trademark witty style, this book is a must-read if you love Historical Fiction, or want to read a gripping book in which you would most definitely be absorbed.
