Theatre is one of the oldest performing arts, using live performers to present stirring events. The stories told can be the figment of a playwright’s vivid imagination, or true events that shook the world. Theatre gives a platform to the dreams and ideas of the society, and has been an important part of our culture for ages. It helps to promote social discourse, dialogue and potential social change.

Theatre, as an ever-evolving art form, shows us a perspective different from our own. It presents complex emotions and touches the hearts of the spectators with its graceful movements and meaningful dialogues. The thousands of people who witness the magic unfolding on the stage, feel connected and in harmony with one-another. It is a collective experience, with people oohing and aahing, laughing and crying in unison. The actors sink into their characters, and their sublime performances transport the viewers into another world for a few hours.

Today, it may seem to us that traditional theatre is on the verge of falling apart, but is built to last. There is an energy in theatre that cannot be recreated in pre-recorded movies and shows. There is a last-minute hustle, lines are forgotten, things don’t go according to plan, and days are saved by quick-thinking and improvisation. The thrill and excitement of being a part of theatre, either as a performer or as a spectator, is unparalleled.

All of us must appreciate this humble, yet sophisticated performing art and support our local theatres. As it is rightly said, a theatre is where we work out our ever-changing definition of humanity, where we seek out empathy, hope and love.
