'Feminism' is a term that is misunderstood and even misused today. It means equality of opportunity for all the sexes- being treated equally, not the same. It emphasizes on the need to recognize the efforts put in by women just like the actions of men are glorified.

Historically, the contributions of women are often overlooked and ignored, even if they had a great impact. Martha Gellhorn, who made history as a war correspondent, Amelia Bloomer, who revolutionized women's clothing, and closer home, freedom fighters like Lakshmi Sehgal and Basanti Devi, were all lost in the pages of history.

The recent controversy surrounding the Critics Choice Awards, with 'I'm Just Ken' by Ryan Gosling being announced the winner, sparked the same debate. It highlighted how male chauvinism is unfortunately still a reality for society today.

These discussions and debates are fruitless until and unless we change how we think, react and behave. We need change at the grassroot level.

Why not start by respecting a woman's choice, whether she chooses to marry or not, have babies or not, work or be a stay at home mom? What if we don't question them at every step, and not point accusing fingers? What if we learn to respect that women are allowed to prioritize themselves without any guilt? And most importantly, why don't we start giving women the credit and recognition they deserve?

I believe Maya Angelou spoke for all women when she said, "My mission in life is not merely to survive but to thrive and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

Women are already rising and thriving. All we need now is a society that accepts and appreciates women as it watches them soar.
