"Emotions are the language of the soul." -Karla McLaren
An emotion is a spontaneous mental reaction, such as joy, sorrow, hate, and love. Emotions are the colours of our life, making it more colourful, lively and beautiful. They are what make us human. We experience varying emotions in different situations, and not all of them are easy to manage.

According to a report by Forbes, in 2020, the world was a sadder, angrier, more worried and more stressed-out place than it has been at any time in the past 15 years. Most of these emotions were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects.
Especially after what all of us on this planet have collectively been through in the past two years, it is essential for us to focus on our mental and emotional wellbeing. A few simple ways by which we can manage our emotions better are:
1. Being mindful of our emotions. We must try to understand what we are feeling, and what may have caused it. It is important to remember that all emotions are natural, normal and neutral.
2. Remembering that we are not our emotions. We feel our emotions. Instead of saying, "I am sad", we should try to say, "I feel sad". This is a distinction that reminds us that all emotions are temporary, and they will pass.
3. Not bottle up our emotions. Letting feelings foster is unhealthy, and may even be toxic. Having an outlet for emotions, like talking to someone, maintaining a diary or meditating is a healthy way of managing emotions.
4. Breathing deeply and listening to sounds mindfully. Whenever we feel overwhelmed with emotions, it is a good idea to take a few minutes out, and focus on the sights, smells and sounds that surround us. This makes us calm, and helps us recenter ourselves.
Little steps everyday can go a long way in making us more centered, and empathetic towards ourselves and others. As Jonathon Martson has rightly said, "Emotions are like waves. We cannot stop them from coming, but we can choose which ones to surf.”
