1. It describes a beautiful era of the past: The classic is set in the late 19th Century, known as the Regency Period in British history. The people and their way of living, their homes and roles in society are intricately explored.

2. The Characterization: The reader can’t help but fall in love with the characters, be it the stubborn, strong-willed Elizabeth Bennet or the socially awkward, handsome Mr. Darcy. Each character, even minor ones, get their time to shine. Character growth: Both Mr Darcy and Elizabeth shed their ‘pride’ and ‘prejudices’ over the course of the novel. Elizabeth becomes more accepting and empathetic, and Mr Darcy grows humbler and kinder.

3. Mr. Darcy: Even though he is introduced as a rich and haughty man, he is perhaps just misunderstood for most part of the novel. The fact that he takes the words of the woman, who rejected his hand in marriage, to heart shows how much he values her opinion. He is vulnerable and humble with Elizabeth, confessing that, “As a child I was taught what was right, but I was not taught to correct my temper. I was given good principles, but left to follow them in pride and conceit.

4. Witty writing: The touch of sarcasm in the book adds humour, and enriches the feel of the classic.

5. The confessions of love: “In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” How beautiful is that?

6. It talks of reading: Elizabeth Bennet is a proud reader who proclaims, “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”

7. The second proposal, which has my whole heart: Quoting Mr Darcy, “If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject forever.”

All in all, Pride and Prejudice is a must-read for all lovers of literature. This is a novel that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading it!
