“The six best doctors are air, sunshine, water, rest, exercise, and diet.” – Wayne Fields
There has been tremendous growth in science and medicine in the past few decades. It has become easier than ever to treat illnesses. Vaccines have successfully eradicated a number of diseases and immunity-boosting multi-vitamins are widely consumed. However, lifestyle diseases still continue to prevail in today’s time.
A lifestyle disease is an illness associated with how a person or a group of people live. They include obesity, heart disease, hypertension and diabetes among many others. Such diseases are caused because of habits like smoking or excessive consumption of alcohol, an unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. Staying at home 24/7, waking up late and binging series after series. Sounds familiar? The COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation even worse.

Recent studies have shown that:
· As of 2021, India has roughly 14.4 million children who are overweight, the second most in the world.
· More than 10 per cent of India’s population over the age of 18 suffers from various kinds of mental illnesses.
· Over the past 30 years, the number of adults worldwide living with hypertension has doubled.
These figures paint a grim picture of the alarming reality.
So, what can we do prevent lifestyle disorders and stay healthy? An Ayurvedic proverb very rightly says, ‘When your lifestyle is not right, medicines are of no use. When your lifestyle is right, medicines are of no need.’ Often, we tend to overlook what is right in front of our eyes, and this situation is one such example. All we need to do is maintain a balanced diet, exercise, keep ourselves hydrated and sleep well. It’s that easy.
Choosing healthier lifestyle behaviours increases psychological well-being and reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. We should embrace yoga and meditate daily for peace of mind. Instead of sitting in front of a screen, we should try to indulge in some physical activities. We must consume fresh fruits, vegetables and juices. Spending some time out in the lap of nature can also do wonders for our physical and mental health. Tweaking little things in our lifestyle can go a long way in creating a disease-free, healthy life.
So, let us all fall in love with taking care of ourselves, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually!
