“It is health that is the real wealth, and not pieces of gold and silver.”

– Mahatma Gandhi

The most important aspect of anyone’s life is health. Health is considered to be of more value than even wealth, and cleanliness is the first law of health. We need to keep our house and its surroundings pure and clean as better hygiene practices mean healthier lives. The father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, also always emphasised on the need for building a clean and green India. We have made progress and have taken many fruitful steps in this area, but more needs to be done to turn his dream into reality.

There are five things I would like to suggest to make India a cleaner and healthier place. First is that, we should look within and understand that charity begins at home. We should maintain proper personal hygiene and segregate our waste. Secondly, we should try to use eco-friendly and recyclable products as much as possible. My third suggestion, to make India healthier is to embrace Ayurveda. This ancient wisdom provides us with simple, dependable and inexpensive cures. It would also make people self-dependent. Next, we should practice yoga at home because it teaches us to cure what need not be endured, and endure what cannot be cured. Last but not the least I suggest that we should give more importance to mental health and well-being. Mental health has been a taboo in India since ages, and people have been discouraged from taking professional help. This needs to change.

There are many habits we can adopt to realise the dream of making India clean and healthy. We should never litter and should carry a paper pack with us to store wrappers and other waste by travelling. Instead of going by car, we should walk, and use public transport of carpool whenever possible. This would help in reducing air-pollution. We should carry steel/glass bottles and lunch boxes to school instead of purchasing plastic ones that are harmful for the environment. Whenever we go out to eat, we should carry utensils with us to avoid using plastic ones. To stay fit and active, it is imperative that we get enough physical activity. We should include yoga and meditation in our day schedule.

We need to work together to build a clean and healthy India. We might face hurdles, but we will overcome them unitedly. If we fall down, we will stand up, dust our clothes and start again. As Margaret Mead has rightly said, “Never doubt if a group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, that is the only thing that ever has.” So let us all pledge to make our dream of a cleaner and healthier India come true, by working with determination and perseverance.

Together, we can!
