A Book that Formed an Integral Part of my Childhood

The smell of a new book, reading for hours on end, and getting transported to a different world as one reads- reading is definitely a magical experience for people of all ages. Ever since I was very young, reading has always been one of my favourite ways to pass my time. There were a lot of books I devoured, some of which I’m sure I don’t even remember the titles of now.

But there were some books which left an indelible impression in my mind. Some had bright and colourful graphics, and some didn’t, but they all had one thing in common- once I started reading them, I couldn’t put those books down.

The first such books that comes to my mind are the Geronimo Stilton and Thea Stilton series by Elisabetta Dami, written under the pseudonym of the characters. All the characters were rodents, and they always had a mystery to solve.

The books had beautiful illustrations, and most of them had tiny facts about the traditions and history of whichever place the characters were visiting. All of the characters were fun and lovable. The books always had a small message or ‘lesson’ at the end, which meant that the reader enjoyed a wholesome story and learnt something new every time. The books were not only entertaining, but also enriching.

As a six- or seven-year-old, I was convinced that this series is never-ending. Of course, that wasn't correct, but was pretty close. There is a combined total of over two hundred books in the two series. The Geronimo Stilton series is widely read across the globe, with over 180 million copies sold worldwide.

I’m sure the series is still loved by the young ones. If you know someone in the age group of 7 to 10 years, do introduce this series to them, and they will probably find a great way to spend hours on end. I’d do the same!

At the end, as I reminisce about this series today, I’d like to say what Geronimo always says-“Oh, how I love books!”
