This Independence Day, as we honour the deeds of the millions who were martyred while fighting for their beloved Motherland, let's remember Kanaklata Barua- a 17-year-old girl who unflinchingly sacrificed her life for her nation.
The day of 20th September 1942- there was mayhem at the Gohpur Police Station. Protesting against the arrest of many freedom fighters was the Mrityu Vahini, a group of young freedom fighters, led by 17- year- old Kanaklata Barua. The protestors raised the slogan of ‘Do or Die’ there, and decided to hoist the national flag at the police station, inspired by Gandhiji’s declaration of the Quit India movement.
There was fire in the eyes of each person, and a deep passion to fight for their rights and their motherland. No one was afraid of the British, of physical torture or of even death.

Unfazed by the warnings of the police not to proceed, Mrityu Vahini marched ahead, led by Kanaklata who held the national flag in her hand. All the threats of the police were met with just two powerful words- ‘Vande Matram!’
Just then, the police shot at Kanaklata. The bang of the bullet echoed in the ears of everyone present there. In spite of being shot, Kanaklata continued to hold on to the tricolour and did not allow it to fall on the ground. She was bleeding profusely, but did not succumb to the injuries till another freedom fighter took the flag from her. Such was her dedication, love and respect towards her Motherland.
At the young age of seventeen, Kanaklata was martyred in her fierce attempt to hoist the tricolour at the police station. However, her sacrifice did not go in vain and Rampati Rajkhowa finally succeeded in hoisting the beloved national flag there. Even as Kanaklata closed her eyes, never to open them again, she smiled watching the Tricolour flying high.
India’s golden moment had arrived. Freedom was not far off.
Everyone was proud of this daughter of the nation, and saluted her spirit. Kanaklata may have been martyred, but her words, “You, young men and women – you the heroes and heroines, colour the earth with your red blood – beautify it with the strength of the promise in your heart, let your warm blood flow like sunshine onto the dark earth”, reverberated in the heart of each Indian.
History is incomplete without Kanaklata’s story in it. She was truly the golden girl of Indian Independence.

Today, and everyday, we are grateful to all the sung and unsung heroes who bled and sweated to help India reach where it is today 🧡🤍💚. A big THANK YOU to our soldiers, who serve our country selflessly, and each Indian who works for the betterment of the nation. We will always be indebted to all of you 🙏🏻.
Wishing everyone a very #HappyIndependenceDay2022 🥳🙌🏻!
