—Carl Sandburg
All of us love poetry, don't we? Here are 7 facts you would want to know if you enjoy reading and/or writing poetry!
1. The word "poetry" is from the Greek term poiesis, which means "making."
2. The word "unfriend" first appeared in a 1275 medieval poem titled "Brut" by Layamon. Coincidentally, this is also the same poem in which the word "muggle" first appears.
3. Metrophobia is the fear of poetry.
4. Existing fragments of Aristotle's Poetics described the three genres of poetry: the epic, the comic, and the tragic. It also laid out the rules for developing each genre to its full potential.
5. German philosopher Johann Georg Hamann called poetry ‘the mother-tongue of the human race.’
6. Poet, playwright and novelist Oscar Wilde called poets ‘the supreme artists.’
7. 'Spoken word' battles have existed as long back as the 5th century, where poets would engage in “flyting,” a spoken word event where poets would insult one another in verse.
